Obituary for Richard "Dick" Weitzel
Richard E. Weitzel, 87, of Wrightsville died Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at his residence. He was the husband of Martha L. (Berger) Weitzel. Dick and Martha celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on September 18, 2017.
Born July 12, 1930 in Columbia, he was the son of the late Luther Lehman and Margie (Markley) Weitzel.
Dick was in the U.S. Army and served in Korea in active combat in the L Company; 31st Infantry; 7th Division. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge with three Bronze Stars.
Dick was the 3rd generation owner of J.L. Weitzel and Son Clothiers in Wrightsville for 42 years. He drove a school bus for Eastern York School District for 24 years. Dick volunteered his services to Fairview Cemetery in Wrightsville since 1959. His volunteerism included being longtime manager and caretaker of the cemetery. He also served on the Wrightsville Cemetery Association board for many years.
Dick was a 1948 graduate of Wrightsville High School and graduated from Thompson Business School. He was a member and past President of the Wrightsville Alumni Association. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Wrightsville. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Chapter # 178, the Kreutz Creek Valley VFW Post 7045, and the Abel-Poff-Leithiser American Legion Post 469 where he was also a past Commander. Dick was a member and Past Master of Riverside Lodge No. 503, F&AM. He was the oldest living Past Master of his lodge. He was also a member of York Forest #30, Tall Cedars of Lebanon and the Forty & Eight of York. Dick enjoyed riding his motorcycle and gardening.
In addition to his wife, Martha, he is survived by his 2 sons, David S. Weitzel of Wrightsville and John R. Weitzel of Jacksonville, FL and his daughter, Susan and her husband, Bob Joines of Felton.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 243 Hellam Street, Wrightsville with the Rev. Timothy W. Sadler, Interim Pastor of the church, officiating. A Masonic service conducted by his lodge will be held Saturday at 9:15 a.m. at the church followed by a visitation from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted at the graveside.
